Instilling Lasting Memories

Instilling Lasting Memories

People unknowingly cheat their children out of beautiful childhood memories when they neglect to interject deeper meaning into the two most popular holidays. Most kids see Thanksgiving as the turkey day and Christmas as the day they get toys. The more meaning parents place on these holidays the more likely their children will grow in appreciation and pass it on to their kids.

Children need to know there are days when they should humble themselves and be thankful for the blessings they've received throughout their existence. Instead of allowing children to think just of themselves on those special days parents should encourage kids to be more giving and focus on the needs of others. Unlike generations past kids today tend to have so much without the work required to attained such materials, all the more reason to change their focus from self to others.

The moments created when a parent gives more meaning to the holidays will last the child's entire lifetime. It will also give the child a more developed hindsight, the ability to look back over recent past events no matter how negative and see all the positives. My most memorable times as a child was when my family gathered around the Thanksgiving table and exchanged pleasant experiences, our way of being thankful for having another year together. Our years together weren't always smooth sailing but somehow through it all we were able to see why we should be grateful.Still today we gather, unfortunately, sometimes work schedules interfere keeping some family members away but the meanings of those holidays remain permanently engraved in our hearts. I'm thankful to my parents for instilling those values within me and explaining why I shouldn't trivialize the two most popular gatherings of the year. What memories of these holidays will your child have as an adult?
