“Spiritual Instinct”

Spiritual Instinct

I watched with interest the other morning as my tabby cat, who has lived his entire life inside, sniffed the breeze blowing through the window with anticipation. It was raining. So I’m certain his acute sense of smell caught a whiff of things that had been stirred up by the gusty winds and torrential downpours. His tiny nose was damp and he peered out the window like he wanted to leap through it and explore all the things he couldn’t see.

“What would you do if you were out there?” I teased. “First of all, the rain would make you hightail it right back inside. Second, if you did get past your fur being all wet, you wouldn’t even know what to do.”

He looked at me with enormous green eyes, blinking slowly as if to say, “Trust me. I’d know what to do.”

Don’t we as humans do the same thing? We get comfortable in our zones. Then we see or hear of someone doing what we’ve had a secret longing to do and our noses get wet. But do we find a way outside to investigate? Or do we stay comfy and warm, propped up on a feather pillow, hoping someone will scratch between our ears?

If we took that chance and leapt out the window, would we know what to do? The same way my cat’s instinct would’ve kicked in, even though it’s been frozen for ten years, our spiritual instinct kicks in when we do what inspires us. No matter how long it’s been since we’ve listened to it.

Plus, we have access to something cats don’t: Faith. We may encounter rain. Something we’ve never seen or heard before may scare us. We may want to run back inside where it’s warm and dry. But think of all of the fun we’ll miss! Sure, maybe we’ll get scratched up a bit. But if that’s the price of the excitement that comes from following spiritual instinct, I’ll pay it. Because my faith tells me I’m always taken care of. How about you?
